Sustainable Art Inspired by Nature

Our creative journey in Zakopane began with a deep dive into an eco-friendly printmaking technique during the “For the Love of the Tatra Mountains” Mokulito workshop.

Our instructors were Wiktoria Kowalczyk-Szlaga and Magdalena Wanat, who introduced us to the mokulito technique—a Japanese method of lithography that uses wood instead of traditional stone or metal plates. Mokulito, meaning wood lithography, is not only a beautiful artistic process but also a sustainable alternative in the world of printmaking.

Why is Mokulito special?

  • It’s environmentally friendly—using wood plates, water-based inks, and non-toxic materials
  • It bridges traditional craft and modern expression
  • Each print carries the natural texture and story of the wood grain

After the lecture, students from all three partner schools started working in mixed international teams. They began by sketching their ideas and preparing the wooden plates for printing. As they worked, they learned how the surface and texture of the wood influence the final result.
